Marshall Field's, a Chicago-based department store chain no longer exists by that name, but they introduced many things about a department store that we now take for granted.
Escalators, animated display windows, personal shoppers, revolving credit, and the concept of a tea room in the store all started with Marshall Field and Company.
"Give the lady what she wants," said Marshall Field (1834-1906), the chain's eponymous founder. So they did.
Field also said:
"Those who enter, support me.
Those who come to flatter, please me.
Those who complain, teach me how I may please others so that more will come.
Only those hurt me who are displeased but do not complain.
They refuse me permission to correct my errors and thus improve my services."
What's the lesson?
Not much. Just gratitude today.
Thank you for your support. Thank you for subscribing.
If you haven't complained yet, I'm not worried. Van Morrison once mentioned that "most of the criticism I have received over the years has been very good."
We're correcting errors on our end every day.
Same thing goes with the new magazine we published earlier in the week, The Los Gatos Review. We are a quarterly print magazine and the first official issue will come out this fall.
Meanwhile, we have a Trial Issue available for the folks. We were going to do a bunch of different discount levels depending on your support and engagement with us over the years, but someone came to me with another idea that I said I'd try.
We're offering this digital version of the magazine for whatever price you want to pay (minimum $6). The cover price is $47. But get it in your hands now for mere peanuts.
The next issue is going to focus on what is in store for us this fall. We have the elections, Thanksgiving, football season starting, and baseball season ending. We've already received a few submissions for publication in the upcoming issue. We're looking for more. Prose, fiction, poetry, criticism, journalism, and more are all welcome.
We set up a page on our website that gives you a tiny peek into what is inside and some of the submission guidelines.
We’re still going to be here with you on Substack once a week (or more). Still expect regular emails from us at briandoleary.com. For those regular emails, if you haven’t already signed up, please visit
The Los Gatos Review will have more than this Substack can offer, so we recommend getting in early. Digital copies only right now, but print copies and subscriptions are coming soon.
As always,
Brian
