In 1924, the great Baltimorean man of letters, H.L. Mencken, co-founded a monthly magazine called The American Mercury, a publication which soon swept the nation.

If he hadn’t been already, Mencken soon thereafter became a national phenomenon.

Mencken said of the Mercury that it was

“a serious review, the gaudiest and damnedest ever seen in the Republic.”

As for us, we aim to be a serious review aimed at serious people.

It probably won’t be the gaudiest and sure won’t be the damnedest, but we’ll provide you with “elegantly irreverent observations of America,” which is what Mencken aimed for in the Mercury.

At our essence we are a daily newsletter, but will also regularly produce “long-form” content for our folks.

Access to the weekly “long-form” content and the complete archives comes with a paid subscription. Currently, the annual subscription plans pencil-out to less than 14¢ per day.

A note on affiliate links

We sometimes use affiliate links as a way to help us support the production for our newsletter, website, and podcast. Affiliate marketing is a widely used practice and some of the biggest brands on the planet use it.

If you click on one of these links and make a purchase, there is a chance we may make a small commission. We’re careful about the products and services we recommend. If we believe that they held little to no value, we wouldn’t recommend them.

With that in mind, go ahead and assume that all links are affiliate links. Do your own due diligence before making a purchase. What is right for us may not be your solution. If you know what you want to achieve, this may make decisions about what to purchase much easier.
